ABOUT
ERNEST COMPTA LLINÀS
Ernest Compta Llinàs was born in Barcelona, where he currently lives, and is trained as an architect. Since 2008, his main activity has been painting. He draws inspiration from music and paints every day—whether in the morning, afternoon, or at night. For him, expressing himself through artistic creation is a vital need. Over the years, he has worked with all kinds of materials—charcoal, ink, pastel, oil—and supports, but gradually he has come to favor acrylics on canvas and paper. Although his painting is in constant transformation, his work always revolves around the same central theme: portraiture. Through a wide range of gestures and facial nuances, he reveals the vast complexity of the human face and its endless expressive possibilities. His aim is for each painting to capture the viewer’s gaze and initiate a dialogue from different perspectives. At times, the titles he chooses function as evocative introductions to the work. His artistic influences lie mainly in abstract art and expressionism. His key references include Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, and Lucian Freud. He has exhibited in New York (USA), San Diego (USA), Milan, Rome, Venice, Cannes, Barcelona, London, Stockholm, and Cali (Colombia), among other cities. He has received several awards and has been featured in numerous magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Revistart, and Spotlight Magazine, and has appeared on the covers of Jaamzin Creative (Singapore), Top Posters (New York), Figgi Magazine (Milan), and Style Cruze (Los Angeles).

THE SOUL BEHIND THE CANVAS
People say the face is the mirror of the soul. I am interested in the face of the soul. Or in the endless possibilities that painting can reflect when it becomes, in my case, that mirror.
Music is important in my creative process because it helps me stop thinking. I forget everything and begin to paint. This way, reason and self-criticism stop bothering me, and I can focus solely on what the painting is asking of me. I don’t listen to just one style of music or a particular artist. I enjoy jazz and electronic music. Painting with music keeps me company and makes the creative process feel less solitary.
The intention behind my works is for the viewer to travel inward and connect, through the painting, with an emotion or feeling they have experienced in their own life.
Exhibiting in different places has meant a great deal to me: it shows that my painting can connect with very different people, who nevertheless share something intimate and at the same time universal.
